Staples Wreckers Boys Tennis

On a chilly Tuesday afternoon, the Staples boys tennis team took care of business in their 7-0 victory against Fairfield Warde.

The Staples Wreckers improved to 8-0 in FCIAC play, while the Mustangs dropped to 4-3, their only other losses coming to division powerhouses Greenwich and New Canaan.

Staples’ Graham Hyman was the first one off the courts in his solid victory over Eyad Nagori at #2 singles, winning 6-2, 6-2. The Wreckers captain had this to say about his performance: “It was a great win considering I had been struggling recently, and it gives me a lot of confidence going into the second half of the season.”

Jake Hirschberg continued his dominance at #1 singles, beating Warde’s Ted Berkowitz 2-6, 6-4, 6-1. In spite of a tough first set, Hirschberg came from behind and knocked off a strong competitor who has given him plenty of problems in the past.

Also winning in the singles lineup for Staples were Josh Moskovitz at #3 over Devon Pulton, 6-3, 6-4, Connor Mitnick at #4 over Peter Simmonds, 6-1, 6-0, and Jack Reardon at #5, who overcame tightness and fatigue to defeat Kanav Kumar, 6-4, 5-7, 10-5.

At #2 doubles, Baxter Stein and Evan Davis managed to eek out a tight first set, and still come back strong in the second, defeating Fairfield’s Connor McGuiness and Sam Warnick, 7-6(3), 6-0.

In the match of the day, Staples’ Zack Levin and Steve Thomson beat the previously undefeated duo of Adam Werner and Kevin Sullivan at #1 doubles, 6-1, 3-6, 7-6(6). Despite facing a match point in the third set tiebreaker, the Staples team fought back, hitting a beautifully placed lob over the heads of the helpless Warde players to clinch the match for the Wreckers.

Staples’ next match is away at St. Joes, while Fairfield Warde faces crosstown rival Fairfield Ludlowe at home.

Recap
On an 85 degree Monday morning which felt more like summer vacation than spring break, the Staples boys tennis team took down a tough Ridgefield team by the score of 5-2. Prior to the match, both teams were undefeated, having torn through all previous opponents.  First off  the courts was Staples sophomore Jack Reardon, who beat Hans Reuter of Ridgefield at #5 singles, 6-1, 6-1. Shortly thereafter, Staples freshman Josh Moskovitz posted a 6-0,6-1 win over Ridgefield’s Keillor Mose at the fourth singles spot.  Eyes quickly turned to Jake Hirschberg, the Staples junior who completed a straight set triumph over Ridgefield’s ace Arnaud Valentin at the #1 singles spot, 6-3, 6-2.

With Staples just one point away from a team victory, freshman Zack Levin overcame the overwhelming heat, heckling fans, and Ridgefield’s Tommy Knortz, by a score of 7-5, 6-3 to clinch the match for the Wreckers and keep them undefeated in the regular season since 2009.  Also winning for Staples was the second doubles duo of Connor Mitnick and Evan Davis, who pulled out a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Pat Sheenan-Delany and Griffen Shyer.  Ridgefield’s only wins came at #2 singles and #1 doubles, where Jordan Kuchta defeated Graham Hyman, 6-4, 6-4, and the team of Matt Deprima and Douglas Butturini outlasted Steve Thomson and Baxter Stein in a three set battle, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5.
