Staples Wreckers Boys Tennis

Thank you to the Westport Board of Ed, the Westport Board of Finance, the Westport RTM for approving $320,000 for the Staples tennis courts.   The project which will be overseen by Westport Parks & Rec involves a total renovation of the existing six courts.  The asphalt will be ground down and replaced with a new layer.  The nets and fencing will be replaced and most importantly improvements will be made to the drainage around the courts to increase the longevity of the replacement courts.   Work is expected to begin and be completed this summer.  The existing courts are almost 30 years old and in dire need of replacement.

UPDATE FROM CIAC: Update 8:15 pm Day two heated up with some great matches and the stage is set for our semi-finals tomorrow at Amity High School, 3:30. John Keogh of Norwalk will preside over the matches tomorrow. The singles match ups are: Jason Seidman, Amity vs Luke Foreman, Staples; and Zach Niklaus, Greenwich vs Reid Risinger, Glastonbury. The doubles contestants are: Miles Singer and Danny Soifer, Westhill vs Doug Butturini and Matthew DePrima, Ridgefield; and Thomas Knortz and Bryson Mosley, Ridgefield vs Alex Romaine and Prashant Toteja, Westhill. The finals of LL and L will be held at Amity High School on Saturday, June 1 at 2:00.

Here’s the latest message from CIAC:

Update Sunday 10:00 am. On Tuesday morning we will have use of 6 tennis courts at nearby St. Joseph’s College (about 1.5 miles from Hall). In order to get through the draw and, possibly, an additional singles round, we will need some teams to go to that site. Supervision by coaches will be necessary and we may have a site director available. If both coaches cannot be on site, we will disallow coaching so that one player/team does not gain an advantage. We must vacate the site by 2:00 to allow for a Girls State tournament home match for NWC.
Welcome to the CIAC Boys Tennis Class LL Tournament Championships. Thank you for your patience with our postponements, and please continue to be patient with a very long day of matches. Play will begin at 8:30 Tuesday with a coaches meeting scheduled for 8:00. We will attempt to play all of the following matches in this order:
1. 8:30: Singles, Opening round (19 matches)
2. Doubles, First Round (25)
3. Singles, Round of 64 (32)
4. Doubles, Round of 32 (16)
With a total of 92 matches scheduled, plan on a long but exciting day of tennis.
Please make sure that you do not go into the building except for the use of bathrooms. No one is to roam the school building. Also, please keep the site clean by picking up and disposing all trash.

5/23/2013 at Shippan Racquet Club, Stamford – Indoors

Greenwich (19-0) defeated Staples (18-2) in the FCIAC Finals for the third straight year. Greenwich won in straight sets at No. 5 Singles, No. 3 Singles and then No. 2 Singles.  Greenwich clinched the match at No. 1 Doubles with a service break in the last game of set three in a very tight battle.  Staples had won the first set in the other three matches which were all suspended when Greenwich clinched the match.

FCIAC Finals vs Greenwich have been moved indoors today, Thursday May 23rd at 3:30pm at the Shippan Racquet Club in Stamford.

Staples (18-1) will take on  undefeated Greenwich (18-0) for the third straight year in the FCIAC Finals.  Staples advanced over Ridgefield in the Semis while Greenwich defeated Fairfield Ludlowe.  Greenwich won the title in 2011 and 2012 and has won 10 of the last 11 years.  Staples last FCIAC crown was 2001 and has been runner-up 8 times since then.  Staples edged out Greenwich in 2011 for the Class LL State title and was runner-up to Greenwich last season.  Greenwich beat Staples during the regular season 5-2. Staples is 56-4 over the last three seasons with all four losses coming against Greenwich.
