Just like the regular season, both Ridgefield and Staples came to the courts knowing that this match could go either way.  And just like the regular season, Staples emerged on top.  Staples Boys Tennis defeated Ridgefield by a score of 4-0 in a highly anticipated FCIAC semifinal that left many fans of both teams with damaged vocal chords. The Wreckers raised their division record to 17-1 on the year, while the Tigers dropped to 15-3.

First off the court was the Staples tandem of Steve Thomson and Zack Levin, who remained undefeated for the season by knocking off Ridgefield’s Matt DePrima and Doug Butturini in a very energetic match at #1 doubles, 6-3, 6-3.  Graham Hyman of Staples then avenged his regular season loss against Ridgefield’s Jordan Kuchta at #2 singles, beating him 6-0, 6-2 to widen the Wreckers’ lead.  The #4 singles matched concluded soon after, as Staples’ Connor Mitnick defeated Ridgefield’s Tommy Knortz, 6-1, 6-4, to put Staples one match away from reaching their 3^rd straight FCIAC final, and their 8^th in 10 years.  With Staples ahead in the other four closely contested matches, Baxter Stein avoided any prolonged drama holding off Hans Reuter of Ridgefield, 6-1, 7-5, at #5 singles to clinch the Staples’ victory prompting the Wreckers to rush the court in celebration.

While Ridgefield prepares for States, Staples faces off against undefeated Greenwich in the FCIAC final on Tuesday, May 29^th. Greenwich has won 9 out of the last 10 FCIAC championships.  Last season the undefeated Wreckers were knocked off by Greenwich in the FCIAC finals but then regrouped to edge Greenwich by 1 point in the State LL finals.

Recap
Despite losing the first two matches, the Staples boys tennis team fought back to defeat New Canaan, 5-2, and clinch the #2 seed in what looks to be a very interesting FCIAC tournament. With the win, Staples finishes their season at 15-1 in conference play, while New Canaan falls to 13-3 in 2012. First off the court was New Canaan’s #3 singles player, Tommy Worcester, who used his strength to his advantage in a 6-0, 6-1 victory over his Staples counterpart, Josh Moskovitz. New Canaan increased its lead with a win at #2 singles, when Will Burger defeated Staples’ Graham Hyman, 6-1, 6-3.

Down 4-0 in the first set, Staples’ Jack Reardon dug himself out of a hole to defeat New Canaan’s Tim Casavant at #5 singles, 7-5, 6-2. After splitting matches with him last year, Staples’ Jake Hirschberg used his team’s momentum and a strong third set to defeat Colgate bound senior, Nick Laub, 6-1, 2-6, 6-1, and tie the overall match score at two apiece. Soon after Connor Mitnick gave Staples the lead with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 victory over New Canaan’s Devin McVeigh at #4 singles, the #1 doubles team of Steve Thomson and Zack Levin gave Staples the victory, beating the duo of Patrick Newton and Jacob Reiss in a three set thriller, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3. Once the match was clinched, Staples’ second doubles team of Evan Davis and Baxter Stein defeated New Canaan’s Luke McDermott and Andrew Penchuk, 6-3, 6-0 to secure Staples’ 5-2 victory.

Staples plays #7 Seed Fairfield Ludlowe (there was a three-way tie for sixth place with Warde and Darien – Darien won #6 seed on coin tosses and Ludlowe won #7 place having beaten Warde head-to-head) at home in the first round of FCIAC’s, while New Canaan has a tough match against Westhill, also at home.

Greenwich need only to split with Darien and Westhill to be guaranteed the #1 seed, as they have already beaten Staples, Ridgefield, and New Canaan.  Staples beat Westhill 4-3 and faces New Canaan this week.  Ridgefield beat both Westhill and New Canaan by identical 4-3 scores.  If Staples beats New Canaan, Staples will be the #2 seed, Ridgefield the #3 seed, and New Canaan the #4 seed.  If New Canaan beats Staples, a coin toss will most likely determine the #2, #3, and #4 positions.  Westhill, Warde, Darien, and Ludlowe  are in the driver’s seat for the last four seeds, although Wilton is still technically alive for a playoff spot.  Top eight teams qualify for playoffs.
